Sticky Wastegate on 2010 pajerosport 3.2 DiD GLS AT

Wed Jan 04, 2017 2:52 pm

Hi,

Hoping for some advice, sounds like the wastegate on my turbo is stuck shut. Whistling on acceleration (not the normal turbo whistle) and Mitsubishi tech said it sounds like a stuck wastegate to him. Had a similar experience with an Amarok and that was a wastegate, so pretty sure I'm in that boat.

Just want to know what I should do? I can replace the turbo (any recommendations in East London or surrounds? Mitsubishi dealers are mad mad in the head, so I need another option), but could also just keep going for a bit.

Any serious risks of driving as is? If I just stick to work and back would I be fine? And how about taking her out on trips to the Wildcoast, some 4x4-ing involved?

I just want to get a grip on the risks I'm taking driving as is.

Thanks

The Pajero Sport never came out with the 140kw, it is either the 3.2 118kw or the 2.5 131kw motor.

The most notable waste gate operation was on the rally Audi Quattro. It opened when the accelerator was lifted.

So my guess is that over boost will happen under high load or on suddenly lifting your foot after a high-ish load.

Well, sounds like overboost is happening under medium load as well, driving up a hill at 60+- and giving it a bit the whistling starts softly until constant speed is reached.

At 120Kph however it whistles constantly and when giving her some more the whistling increases. A bit irritating I must say.

Just want to know what damage I can cause by continuing like this?

I understand that because the wastegate is stuck closed the exhaust air is pushed back and escapes somewhere else, causing the whistling. Am I right? Danger of breaking seals, etc.? Or won't the pressure build up that high? Can I drive as is for a while?

Maybe have the turbo checked first. I'll be very surprised if the waste gate will have to open under medium load at 60kph.

Vehicle has been running like a dream, so haven't been on the forum in a while - just to close off this topic:

The EGR pipe flange was slightly deformed (due to age, heat, pressure, etc.) as the flange is fastened by two bolts on either side (image of the gasket below to illustrate):

Anyway, the guys at Hi Way Motors in East London were quite quick to figure it out and sorted me out quickly and relatively cheaply - the gasket was fine, but because of the slight deformation there was air escaping causing the squeal.

Still have a bit of exhaust leaking there though as I notice some soot buildup, but not much.

Glad to hear, and thanks for closing the loop.
Yeah, your symptoms didn't fit wastegate.

The original mac, that referred to his Amarok experience, is he convinced the Rok actually has a wastegate? I'd have guessed they would be running VG turbos.

I'm not quite sure, was driving the Amarok around for a day or so before deciding to buy it when it started with the squeal. Took it back, they then took it to VW who apparently replaced the waste gate, then I had it for another day or so when the clutch started going. So I ended up not buying the Amarok, opting for my Mitsu. Best choice. Needless to say I didn't look much into the Amarok's problems, just took it back to the people I wanted to buy it from. But apparently the wastegate sits on the manifold and isn't internal to the turbo as with the Pajerosport, which makes for a much cheaper and maintenance friendly situation I think.
